Here you can see a selection of Jim Kay originals and concept art produced for the books which preceded the Harry Potter commission. Jim began his illustration career with a very close relationship with Walker Books in London, and as a result he produced work for the classic book by Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls) as well as one on insects by George McGavin (Bugs) and The Flaxfield Quartet, a charming set of books by Toby Forward which Jim really enjoyed.
In these pages you'll see examples of work from all these books – and one or two self-initiated pieces which show just how talented Jim is, and how he loves to experiment with different media. He hopes to return to more printmaking at a later stage in his life.
