John has produced hundreds of book illustrations during his career. He is best known for his science fiction illustration (more of these from Jane Frank at Worlds of Wonder, www.wow-art.com) but there are also many evocative earthly landscapes produced for both travel books (Dervla Murphy, Stanley Stewart, Benedict Allen) and for general fiction (Wilbur Smith, Sibyl Marshall, Elizabeth Jane Howard, William Boyd).
Many of these were highly praised by the authors and in some cases the originals have been bought by them. Others remain in John's collection but some are now available for sale.

His personal work is quite different and includes marine art, Devon landscapes and experimental painting.
