A ‘Magic’ talk at the British Library

Jim Kay and Olivia Lomenech Gill will be speaking about their work for the Harry Potter books at the British Library on 17th November at 7.00. This is to coincide with the exhibition ‘A History of Magic’ currently on show which includes some of their illustrations alongside some magnificent artefacts from the British Library’s own collection. The above illustration is Jim Kay’s Grindylow. You won’t see that at the exhibition but it’s included in the recently published Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

fb-cover-2I understand that J K Rowling quickly assembled the book we know as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as a generous way of raising funds for Comic Relief. It was initially a relatively modest book but with the addition of Olivia Lomenech Gill’s illustrations it has made the most wonderful transformation. She was an inspired choice on Bloomsbury’s part, and the result is a glorious collection of etchings, charcoal drawings, watercolours – and a rather special design by Stephanie Amster of Bloomsbury. Look out for Olivia on BBC’s Countryfile on Sunday 5th November where you may find out more about how these illustrations were produced.

Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose

album2We had a call a few months ago from the manager of Ben Drew (Plan B) to say that Ben had noticed John’s painting, Quiet Night, and would like to talk about it. Some really interesting conversations resulted from that, and now Ben has chosen the painting for the cover of his new album, Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose. We wish Ben all the best, and I’m sure this new album is going to be as successful as She Said. Now try listening to that and then resisting singing it for the rest of the day.

Norse Myths publication

p184_lokiback_400dpi_revisedThis magnificent book illustrated by Jeffrey Alan Love will be published on 1st November in the UK and it’s already attracted mountains of interest in the US. Here’s a review in Publishers Weekly, and another in Kirkus Review. Jeff has given an interview on “Muddy Colors” and it’s also been selected by the Junior Library Guild for Fall 2017. It’s a coming together of the very best writer, artist and designer on the subject, and also the best of publishers. What a happy outcome of noticing Jeffrey’s work at Illuxcon a few years ago.

Lucky Jim, for the HOI

lucky-jim-72Paul Cox was asked by the House of Illustration to illustrate a new cover for Lucky Jim. This is part of a fund-raising exercise so these and others will be auctioned on 11th December. It should be quite a star-studded event with many illustrators offering their work in support.
