Grahame Baker Smith and Oscar Wilde

Grahame’s work is going to form part of an exhibition at the British Academy during Literature Week, 11-17th May 2015. The illustrations above, The Young King and The Happy Prince, were produced for the Folio Society’s edition of The Selfish Giant and Other Stories. See more about the exhibition here.

Grahame says: “In my imagination I created them as if Wilde were alive and would be looking at them, correcting proofs and commenting, so I tried to do something that Wilde would (hopefully) approve of. I also thought it might be fun to put Wilde himself into a couple of the illustrations. For me the story of The Happy Prince is Wilde’s portrait of his own character.”
