John Harris was invited to the private view of the new exhibition at Tate Britain this week as he is one of today’s artists known to have been influenced by the Victorian artist of the apocalypse. John’s painting, Quiet Night was used in the Tate booklet and he was quoted:
“The Last Man produced a powerful sense of recognition. The haunting atmosphere and the sense of the vastness of space and time in the piece is something which often recurs in my work. These are the fundamental elements of what I think of as a new Romanticism implicit in our world view and of which John Martin was a harbinger.”
